As we move into spring here in the Midwest we will face storms like this. Are you prepared?
It is time to do a spring review of your home, auto, and insurance policies. It is better to be prepared than get caught with a problem when you won't have time to prevent damage. This is when your agent and insurance company can help. Do you have adequate coverage? When was the last time you re-evaluated the cost to replace your home if the worst happens? Do you have replacement cost coverage? If you are not "insured to value" on coverage "A" (the structure value) you risk not being able to rebuild your home as it was before the loss. Do you have an updated home inventory? Do you have an emergency weather radio?
Do you have a safe room pre-stocked with clothing, boots, raingear, mask, eye protection, first aid supplies, medicines, water, snacks or food, flashlights, battery powered radios, extra batteries, a whistle, various tools like maybe a hammer, knife, saw, multi-tool etc...
Some of these storms grow to very powerful levels that will damage or destroy property. However, for the average thunderstorms you can take some preventive measures. On your home check for clogged gutters and proper drainage away from your foundation. How is your sump pump operating? Maybe invest in a cover for your air conditioner condenser, and if you have skylights have a wire protective cover installed. Check your roof for signs of shingle damage or wear. Check the caulking around window and door frames. For your cars be sure to park them in the garage or in a parking garage when a storm is approaching.
