National Doughnut Day!
The first Friday each June is National Doughnut Day.
This day celebrates the doughnut or donut and the Salvation Army Lassies. In 1917 during WWI the ladies of the Salvation Army went to the front lines in Europe with home cooked meals to boost morale.
The doughnuts were often cooked in oil inside the metal helmets of American soldiers. The America infantryman were commonly called "doughboys".
